The Janka rating measures wood’s resistance to dents, scratches and wear. The higher the Janka rating, the more resistant the hardwood floors will be to your pet’s claw marks. Red oak, white oak, hickory, walnut and pecan are domestic species with very good hardness ratings. Exotic woods like Brazilian cherry and acacia are among the most durable hardwoods available.
Another good option for dog owners is distressed wood. Distressed wood flooring is great because a scratch or dent doesn’t detract from the floor’s beauty. Before distressed wood is finished, the softer wood fibers are scraped off, leaving the textured, harder grain, Paired with the dog-friendly finish, dents and scratches are almost invisible.
