The type or style of carpet you buy will depend on where you’re using it, your tastes, and your budget. Carpet style refers mainly to how the carpet fibers are woven. There are five common styles, each with their own qualities.
Saxony (Plush) – best for formal settings with low traffic. Velvet-like soft surface and very luxurious, but shows vacuum tracks and footprints easily, so is fairly high maintenance.
Textured – good for high traffic areas such as family rooms, playrooms and stairs. Durable, and doesn’t show dirt, footprints or vacuum tracks so much.
Frieze (Twist) – more informal, almost like a short shag style. Hides vacuum tracks and footprints.
Looped (Berber) – formal, not ideal if you have kids or pets because it can snag easily. Easy to clean.
Sculptured ( Cut & Loop or Pattern) – good for families, kids and pets, and hides dirt better than other styles. Patterns can feel outdated fairly quickly.
In addition to the style of carpet, another thing to consider is what the carpet strands are made of. Options include wool, nylon, olefin, polyester and even plastic bottles that have been recycled and turned into carpeting.
